JANELLE SLUNG the fur-trimmed cloak about her shoulders and strode rapidly around the pool toward the guest house.

“Hold on!” Petey groused, hurrying to snag her by the shoulder and turn her around.

“Not now!” she said, seething, glancing in the direction of the house. True, everyone had dispersed after their announcement and Beth’s melodramatic exit—honestly, that girl just couldn’t bear for anyone else to be the center of attention—but you never knew who might be watching and listening.

“Just tell me why you nixed the big wedding,” Petey grumbled, lowering his voice. “The real Connor would get a big wedding, not to mention a boatload of expensive gifts!”

“What are a few wedding gifts compared to the mother lode of the Maitland fortune when Megan announces you’re her long-lost son?” Janelle insisted, turning away once more. It was too damned cold to stand out here explaining the facts of life to this ninny of a husband of hers.

“But what about our introduction to society?” Petey argued, hurrying along beside her. “I thought you wanted—”

Janelle stopped and rounded on him, relatively sure that the deepening night and the shrubbery would shield them from view of the house. Distance should manage the rest. “Will you just think for once? A Maitland society wedding would be big news. With all the press coverage of late, we can’t risk it.”

“But—”

“The real Connor could get wind of it,” she told him irritably. “Or just reading his name in the paper could shake little Miss Amnesia out of her stupor. And why haven’t you taken care of that?”

“I’m working on it,” he whined. “A murder takes careful planning.”

“It also takes guts,” Janelle said, pushing her face close to his, lest he miss her implications.

His handsome but stupid face hardened. “I said I’d take care of it, and I will.”

“Fine. You take care of the brat’s mother, and I’ll take care of the wedding.”

“Whatever you say,” he mumbled.

Janelle turned on her heel and strode toward the guest house. Being married to this jerk was wearing thin on her, and here she was about to marry him for the second time! Wouldn’t Megan and the others croak if they knew the truth of it! Any whisper of the truth could blow the whole deal—or worse—and there were already too many loose ends, namely the real Connor, and Lacy, the baby’s mother. If that nutcase should regain her memory… Janelle shuddered at the possibility. They had to be careful. They not only stood to lose the Maitland millions but would almost certainly wind up in jail if they were discovered. Why didn’t Petey realize that?

Still, the big lug had his uses, and so did this so-called Maitland wedding. She had no choice but to play this thing through. True, they were walking a tightrope, but her balance had always been good, even if Petey’s was a little uncertain. As if to prove it, he grumbled sullenly that he’d been thinking a lot about those wedding gifts.

Janelle rolled her eyes. “Will you shut up about the wedding gifts! The family will be very generous, count on it.
